Empowering Our Sisters: The Power of Female Entrepreneurship in South Africa

By Bongiwe Mosele-Magampa

Hello, beautiful souls!

I love South Africa. Truly. Our country is beautiful and the people who live and work here are gutsy and brave. We have a special brand of humour, of we’ll-face-this-together-ness, and of empathy. However, while the small business sector helps keep this nation’s economy alive, being an entrepreneur in Cape Town, or anywhere in South Africa, brings its unique set of challenges. Being a female entrepreneur even more so, it seems.

Look, I know we are empowered. I know we are not facing the challenges our predecessors faced 100, or even 50 years ago. However, as a woman in business, there are a few challenges that we have to acknowledge. I’m not complaining. I’m just not in denial. We have to balance business and family, cultural expectations and limitations, our own fear of failure (maybe that’s not just us women), limited role models, and gender stereotypes.

Yet, it’s our inherent desire for growth, our grit, our unwavering belief in the ‘yes!’ that makes our journey truly special.

So, I’m here to celebrate what we DO have, and how we can make it even better for those around us.

Woman in business, you are amazing. Here’s how you can pay it forward

Let me share a few heartwarming ways we, the women of this country, can lift each other higher, especially in the exciting yet challenging realm of entrepreneurship.

  1. The Beauty of Mentorship: I don’t know about you, but as a fledgeling entrepreneur, I desperately wanted a mentor. I still do! Mentors make it possible for us to avoid common mistakes, be a soundboard, and grow faster, with less fear. Well, in the absence of a mentor, I am being the person I needed when I was starting out. It’s a journey of sharing, teaching, and bonding. Let’s be the guiding light for those just starting out in business.
  2. Create Safe Circles: There’s something truly empowering about women coming together. By forming or joining female-focused business groups, we build our very own powerhouse. A haven where stories, opportunities, and dreams are shared. I’ve started a group for women in business. Let me know if you want to join!
  3. Collaborations That Count: Why do all the women at a braai get up to make the salad? Why do we go to the loo in groups at a restaurant? Because women are natural-born collaborators. We work well together. Even if you’re a solo-preneur like me, at our hearts, we thrive and yearn for connection and collaboration. Let’s use this God-given trait to our advantage! Where I’m weak, you’re strong – and vice versa. I have made some wonderful collaborations with my gift boxes, with everything from local authors and artisans, to local skin care products and cellars. This way, I win, you win, the customer wins, everyone wins!
  4. Invest with Intention: If you can, consider sprinkling some financial love on female-led startups. This isn’t just about money; it’s about trust, faith, and empowerment.
  5. Share, Share, Share! Be it your grandmother’s melktert recipe or a business tool that’s worked wonders, sharing is caring, ladies. There’s enough for everyone so make the love go round.
  6. Peer Power: There’s so much wisdom in our community. Why not harness it through workshops or seminars? I’ve seen some of the most radiant ideas emerge from these sessions right here in Cape Town.
  7. Celebrate Our Stories: Each time a female entrepreneur in South Africa takes a step forward, it’s a win for all of us. Let’s shout these stories from the rooftops!
  8. Build Safe Havens: Spaces where we can speak, laugh, cry, and simply be. A place where challenges like balancing family, work, and tackling biases can be discussed freely. As I said, I’ve created a digital “safe haven” where we can share, connect, and be authentic. If you want to join, contact me.
  9. Word-of-Mouth Wonder: If you’ve had a pleasant experience with a fellow entrepreneur, pass it on! Your word might just be the nudge someone else needs. Referrals are amazingly powerful.
  10. A Supportive Supply Chain: Let’s bring our businesses closer home. Source products and services locally, and support our sisters in the process.

Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin

I know that starting out can be tough, and you might feel like the David in the David and Goliath story. Heck, there’s been days that I’ve felt more like the pebble jumbled about in a shepherd’s bag than the future king! 😂 But remember, no matter how small you are, how small your beginnings are, just start. Don’t quit. They are not an indication of where you will end up. You never know what giants will topple at the end of your journey!

So, my dear fellow women in business, we are all in this together. As we navigate the thrilling world of entrepreneurship, let’s remember to lean on each other, celebrate every little victory, and above all, let the spirit of Ubuntu shine through.

Stay radiant, and here’s to our collective strength and success! 💕🌸🌍
